The 2017 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards took place Sunday evening. The annual awards ceremony highlights outstanding performances in film and primetime television. What do we love most about awards season, the red carpet fashion and on show last night were some of the latest Spring 2017 collection pieces.
Among the notable recipients was first-time SAG winner Sarah Paulson, who was awarded the Best Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for her role in The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story. She has already won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the riveting based-on-true-events series. Paulson wowed in a black belted Vera Wang Spring 2017 gown, paired with a white clutch and diamond hoop earrings.
Emma Stone took the award for Best Female Actor for her role in the romantic musical La La Land. The scarlet-haired actress turned heads in a lace and velvet Alexander McQueen gown. The gown was decorated with lily pad designs, she looked beautiful and held it together even though she exclaimed she was “going to faint” due to being so overwhelmed in her acceptance speech. She also spoke up against Donald Trump’s recent effort to ban refugees from entering the United States, by saying, “We’re in a tricky time in the world and our country and things are inexcusable and scary and need action. I’m so grateful to be part of a group of people that cares and wants to reflect things back to society.”
Like Stone, several celebs used their platform to speak out against Donald Trump. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the first award of the night for her role in Veep. In her speech, Louis-Dreyfus said, “I’m an American patriot. And I love this country, and because I love this country, I am horrified by its blemishes, and this immigrant ban is a blemish, and it is un-American.” Ashton Kutcher and Taraji P. Henson were also just a couple of the big names that showed their distaste for Trump during the awards.
It was not a surprise that the teenage cast of Stranger Things won Best Cast in a TV Drama Series. The kiddos were all smiles as they accepted the award. Millie Bobby Brown was darling in her custom-made Emporio Armani gown. With lace capped sleeves and a belted waist, the thirteen-year-old stunned. Her male co-stars were decked out in suits, ranging in from velvet to pin-stripes.
Famed actor Denzel Washington is no stranger to the industry. He took Best Male Actor for his role in Fences, a movie about a black man struggling to accept his role as husband and father during the Civil Rights Movement. Washington looked handsome as he thanked on-screen wife Viola Davis, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences too.
Although the evening honored many others, actress Lily Tomlin was highlighted when she was named the 53rd Life Achievement Recipient. This is the highest tribute of the SAG Awards, and honors career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. Country legend Dolly Parton presented the award.
Cheers to the winners and all the nominees! We can’t way to see what 2017 brings in entertainment.
