SPRING SUMMER ’16 MAKEUP TRENDS

January 8, 2016

By Hannah Powling

Spring Summer 2016 introduced an array of brand new and exciting makeup trends; and months back we were in the hustle-bustle of the backstage makeup where we caught a glimpse of what was to come, and I couldn’t wait to tell you all about it. Well, the time has come to report officially what products you need to have at the ready for the season to come, and frankly, what you can leave behind in your makeup drawers…

The introduction of big, distorted lashes with graphic liner and playful eyeshadow colours with (considered) imperfect and bold application. For lips it was all about the reinvention of the classic red lip. Gone with the pillar-box red and in comes a brick, warm and orangey hue against a bare face. The colour of the season for eyes is blue. You heard us right – cobalt blue is back, and bolder than ever, so wear it with confidence!

The key words cropping up from the trend report is ‘All‘ or ‘Nothing‘. So whether you’re making a decisive statement or stripping down to real basics – they are both equally as strong and relevant to SS16.

Take a look below to see some of the best and newest makeup trends..

Blue, Blue, Blue.

Go on, brave this look and whip out your old blue shadows. We love a bit of nostalgia, oh, it takes us back… Here’s a little secret; even being not so great at applying this look – you nail it. So smudge on with your fingers if you are a bit mucky with your technique…and …Yesss!

blue
An urban twist on the old cobalt blue we all know and love. Bold, blue liner is a good place to start for this.

As Terry Barber says, “Feel like a woman in the Summer“.

tropical 70
Tropical wash of aquatic shades. Think mermaid, but a 70’s mermaid, with bursts of ‘Lilt’ colours.

WHAT YOU NEED:

These colours are pretty bright, and Makeup Revolution is a good place to start to recreate a look like this, with their Mermaids Forever Palette with 32 gorgeous strong pigment colours for you to play around with.

TIP: Have a try of the MAC Pro Marine Ultra Chromaline for a bold graphic blue liner, it’s waterproof gel that’ll last all day.

LEAVE BEHIND: Pop away your neutral eyeshadows for this look, have some fun!

Hot Cherry Lips

sd
The new twist on the classic red; with sepia-toned terracotta red against bare skin.

TIP: Shades like MAC Chili, or Charlotte Tilbury Walk of Shame will be perfect for this trend. Plus – don’t be afraid to mix up colours to get the perfect shade! Brown-toned liners will be perfect to mix in with your red lipstick to tone it down.

LEAVE BEHIND: Your bright bluey reds, it’s all about the warm tones… for now, until they come back in again of course.

Broken Doll

s
Graphic liner lashes – sporadic, chunky, irregular, imperfect. Like a cool biker chick, pretty damn cool really.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Lashings of mascara, that’s what. For starters get yourself some lash primer for extra protection, as well as extra layers for careful and perfect layering up of the product for the biggest but best lashes around. Here are our best picks.

A good volume mascara is a good starting point with this trend, it’s ALL about the lashes. We like NARS Audacious and MAC In Extra Dimension 3D Black Lash where the wands allow you to really build up the product.

TIP: Try chopping up your falsies too, and layer them on in pieces to get some quirky cool looks to change things up a bit.

LEAVE BEHIND: Thick strips of false lashes, for this one we like the gappy, more wispy lashes for a pretty but edgy look.

LAID BARE

going bare
Going bare.

We love this fresh-faced look. It is reality, with skin textures and colours. The face gleams and for this, makeup looks like great skincare, and the two become just as important as each other.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Perricone MD No Makeup Makeup range is a great place to start, with their super sheer products to only enhance your natural beauty.

MAC Pro Longwear Paintpot in Groundwork for neutral shade blended in the eyes to sink in the sockets like Gigi above. The cream texture is perfect for this trend to sink into the skin, but this one’s long lasting too.

TIP: Press in light brown eyeshadow or liner with an angled brush, right on or as close as you can to the lash line so it looks like thicker lashes, and not like liner.

LEAVE BEHIND: The 2015 heavily contoured look, let’s keep it natural ladies!
