RESTAURANT REVIEW: BONE DADDIES

July 12, 2016

By Hannah Powling

This isn’t your average noodle joint. This is Bone Daddies.

Here’s a pre warning as you may become somewhat of a ramen snob after visiting this restaurant. We are big fans of all things Japanese food and ramen in particular here at Beauty and the Dirt – so when we heard the news of a new Bone Daddies restaurant opening up in Old Street it was clear we HAD to go and visit them.

“I want to challenge people’s perceptions of Japanese food… I want to make it accessible to everyone” – Bone Daddies chef Ross Shonan.

Bone Daddies’ “great tasting, no-bullshit Japanese food” menu is a carefully curated and one hell of a delicious one at that – and it’s no wonder why they’re opening up more restaurants around London. People clearly can’t get enough of their food… and we don’t blame them.

The new location is based just off Old Street Underground Station on Baldwin Street, and we showed up after a long day at work and started off (of course) with a couple of margaritas – which was the perfect refreshment whilst deliberating what to order.

Chicken and Spring Onion Kushikatsu & Korean Fried Chicken Wings with a side of Kimchee.

The Bone Daddies menu is broken down into three sections: snacks, kushikatsu and ramen.

Let’s start with some side dishes. We opted for the popular Kushikatsu, and Korean Fried Chicken Wings as they were recommended to us by the lovely staff there. The Kushikatsu was gorgeously moist chili chicken & spring onion skewered and covered in crispy breadcrumbs. It came piping hot (which is what I like) and is the perfect dish to share while you’re waiting for your main. The wings – my god they were good. Bathed in a sweet and sour type sauce, with crispy fried skin topped with sesame seeds. They were THE definition of finger-licking goodness.

Our ramens: Pork Tonkotsu and Chicken Tantanmen.

In comes the Ramens. We chose the Pork Tonkotsu with chashu pork, spring onion, in a creamy 20 hour pork bone broth and the Chicken Tantanmen with chicken mince, pulled chicken in a hearty chicken bone broth laced with chilli. These flavoursome, wholesome and hearty noodle soups were full of indulgent ingredients and toppings – absolutely irresistible. I’m craving one again now even writing about it…

Coconut and Raspberry Mochi.

By this time it is safe to say we we’re ridiculously full, partly because we didn’t want to stop eating the glorious food even though our bellies couldn’t fit much more in!

Nonetheless we couldn’t resist but squeeze in a Mochi or two (there’s always room for sweet stuff right?) so we chose the Coconut and Raspberry. Mochi is a kind of ice cream wrapped in an ultra soft layer of pounded sticky rice. What a wonderfully fresh ending to a hearty meal.

Bone Daddies have definitely reached their desire of memorable, standout Japanese food. It’s been over a week and I’m STILL obsessing over that ramen. I must go again very, very soon.
