I remember when Mother’s Day was just about getting a few flowers. No mother expected or demanded more. I must admit mine was rather disappointed one year when I really left it to the last minute and stole them from the local cemetery… But that was a long time ago. Of recent years floral tributes have arrived, lunches have been long and lingering, usually a group affair with my mother’s best friend and daughters – very jolly.
This year I’m not sure what happened. I forgot to make a booking. I should’ve made a booking two, three, four weeks ago. Or at least someone should . No one did. And this year Mother’s Day seems to have come early.
Somewhere, somehow, in the group consciousness everyone decided it’s Mother’s Day in January and let’s get busy. In the way that some Christmases are always early and some years Oxford Street is packed on Christmas Eve.
There were no restaurants taking bookings for two or four or any number at all. No bookings. No restaurant that my mother has ever been in and liked had a booking. Then I tried restaurants that my mother doesn’t like. They didn’t have a booking not even at 11am or 3.30pm.
The flowers: Did I want Monday delivery? Disaster. If anybody has been untimely and as disorganised as I have and needs a last-minute Mother’s Day gift I have it.
