Ringing in the new year means that it’s time for the film award season to start. After the Golden Globes kicked off the Time’s Up movement, you can be sure that this awards season will be a must watch. It looks like the all-black dress code has ended, but the movement is far from over.
Here’s the rundown on each of the upcoming award ceremonies so that you can tune in.
London Critics Circle Film Awards
This awards ceremony is the next one you can be ready to watch on 28 January. Some of their main awards are Best Picture and Best Actor.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri did well at the Globes, and it has received nominations at all of the upcoming major award shows. We’re hopeful that it will be able to walk away with the FCC Best Picture Award.
Timothée Chalamet is a new fan favourite after his appearance on the Golden Globe red carpet. There was a social media outcry when Oldman won that award, but we hope Chalamet won’t leave these awards empty-handed.
The BAFTA Awards
This year’s BAFTA awards are coming up on 18 February. Instead of Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley will be hosting. Some of the major awards for this ceremony are Best Film and Outstanding British Film.
The Shape of Water led the nominations at the BAFTAs and will be sure to take home several of the awards – we’re hoping for Best Film.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri took home 4 Golden Globes earlier this month and will likely only add to their collection with an award such as the Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs in February. It is up for 9 awards.
The Academy Awards (The Oscars)
These nominations will not be announced until January 23, but we will be shocked if I, Tonya, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and The Greatest Showman don’t make several appearances on the lists of nominees. These awards will take place on 4 March, and they will be hosted by late night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, for the second year in a row.
National Film Awards (UK)
The NFA Nominations were announced on 15 January. These are unique because they are led by fan opinion. Fans have a hand in both nominating and voting. The voting is open until 26 March, and the awards will be given on 28 March. Some of the top categories include Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Newcomer.
Nathalie Emmanuel previously brought the Best Actress Award home for Furious 7. She is a likely winner this year for her role in the Fate of the Furious.
With the large number of nominations that Kingsman—The Golden Circle has received, Taron Egerton is likely to bring the Best Actor Award home.
Of course, Harry was loved for his performance in Dunkirk by his own fans. His acting debut was praised by critics as well. We are rooting for him to win the Best Newcomer Award.
After the Golden Globe Ceremony, you can be sure that the remaining ceremonies will be politically charged opportunities for celebrities to make their voices heard through both red carpet apparel and acceptance speeches.
