I’m here to tell you that the first chilly rainy evenings of AW14 really aren’t going to be that bad. Seriously. And this is coming from me, summer girl extraordinaire. I suffer from a serious case of winter-denial when it gets to October. October, as far as I’m concerned, is when I have to admit that summer has really come to an end for another year. So I get a bit grumpy, I fling around ‘I hate winter’ phrases and vow to hibernate until Spring arrives in March the next year.
But this year I’m fighting back, I’m going to turn the first signs of winter around into something wonderful, and I’m arming myself with two things. A big, huge cashmere jumper and one darned gorgeous candle. They’ll be there waiting for me at home on the greyest, coldest of evenings, just the thought of them will get me through the day.
And my candle of choice this season? Molton Brown’s Oudh Accord & Gold Single Wick Candle (£36.00). Now first of all…it’s gold. And that gorgeous matte, Monica Vinader type gold to boot. If I happened to hate the smell I’d still end up popping it out for all to marvel at its beauty. But I don’t hate the smell. I love the smell.
Moroccan scents made it big a couple of years ago, but I have never been their biggest fan. They tend to be too heavy, too enveloping and musky for me, but Molton Brown seem to have taken the general Oudh essence and calmed it down. What you get with this candle is warmth, a cosy, feminine warmth that errs more on the side of subtle.
Don’t buy this as a present, don’t treat someone special to it. Be utterly, wonderfully selfish and gift it to yourself. It’s a luxurious AW14 essential.
