That teenage girls get starry-eyed over young, handsome (and talented) heartthrobs is nothing revolutionary. For generations the fashion, music and magazine industries have tapped into the worldwide appeal of a mussed-up haired, guitar strumming hottie. It’s why Teen Vogue’s biggest selling magazine of last year was the December issue, thanks to the youthful faces of boy band One Direction gracing the cover.
And according to WWD, the teen magazine are set to feature teen-star Justin Bieber on the cover of their May issue.
The coverage however comes at a rather controversial time for the troubled teen who has had a month of mayhem and is currently surrounded by fears and rumours of a potential breakdown. There was that YouTube video of the singer threatening to “fuck up” a pap which went viral, the time he popped on a gas mask to go shopping, was accused of assault, bought a monkey a la Michael Jackson and then cancelled a concert. . .
So maybe the mag cover which reads “Justin’s Crazy Year” is something of a silver lining for the global superstar.
As for the impact it will have for Condenast, that remains yet to be seen as WWD state that since ‘his star has dimmed…his pull on the newsstand is soft’. And yet, surrounded by speculation this may well be the type of feature Teen Vogue readers will adore.
Bieber himself is far from troubled by the supposed mayhem and media attention, “I don’t need to address every speculation. Remember when Cam’ron dissed Jay-Z? Jay-Z didn’t even respond. Why didn’t he respond, because he’s Jay-Z.”
