Afternoon tea got a whole lot fancier when the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge opened the stunning Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum and Mason.
The elegant tea salon spanned the whole of the fourth floor and was everything I could have wanted. We kicked off with a three-tiered rack of anti-Atkins glory, along with a variety of preserves and tea in Fortnum’s branded teapots. The top tier was home to a selection of individual cakes that included a heavenly chocolate tart and a pistachio and raspberry creation that made me feel like I’d won something special. The middle tier had home made scones with multiple eating options, including clotted cream, lemon curd and strawberry jam. The bottom tier was filled with sandwich fingers that rubbished any picnic I have ever been on- coronation chicken, succulent rare roast beef, delicate cucumber, smoked salmon and egg with cress.

The goodness didn’t stop there. They also had a silver cake carriage that was adorned with larger cakes. Usually I would have had my sugar fill and politely declined. However, one particular chocolate cake caught my eye, and frankly who am I to ignore that. It was a dark chocolate layer cake, each layer gooier and more chocolaty than the last – heaven on a green and white plate.
Fortnum and Mason’s Classic Afternoon Tea costs from £38 per head and is served daily from 12 noon
