Hollywood it-girl, Emma Stone, warmed hearts everywhere when she spoke out about her mother’s personal battle with breast cancer while attending the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation’s 6th annual Peace, Love and a Cure cocktail reception in Creskill, N.J. on Tuesday.
Emma’s mom, Krista Stone, was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2008 when Emma was only 19 and living in Los Angeles by herself. That didn’t stop the actress from flying to Arizona every chance she got to support her mother through treatments that included a double mastectomy and a year and a half of chemotherapy.
“I was oddly stoic, the opposite of how I usually am,” Emma said. “But I was terrified.”
They celebrated a cancer-free five years with matching blackbird tattoos modeled after The Beatles song “Blackbird” and designed by none other than Paul McCartney himself.
The actress has participated in multiple campaigns to raise awareness of the disease including Revlon’s Your Lips Can Save Lives which promotes early detection.
