The skirt-over-trousers micro-trend may well have swept the AW12 catwalks, from Prada and Fendi to Chanel, Issa and Joseph, but it takes a seriously fearless fashion-follower to attempt the look which was last seen, to someone disastrous effect, back in the 90s. Which is why we were so taken aback to see the usually chic, although not necessarily fierce-looking, Emma Watson wearing this Dior ensemble at last night’s Gala screening of The Perks of Being A Wallflower.
Seemingly a try for the best of both worlds, Emma paired a gorgeous strapless prom Dior dress with tuxedo trousers – a combination that left us on the fence and slightly luke-warm. As Emma’s red carpet events go this is perhaps the blandest we’ve seen the Harry Potter actress who usually she dons a beautiful dress, like the embroidered Erdem dress she wore to the Toronto Film Festival. However, we have to say we actually really like the understated strapless Dior LBD and pointed court heels – just lose the trousers, or better yet, pair them with an edgy top.
Outfit aside, Emma’s hair looked super cute, with romantic curls pinned back and a single wispy strand left out to frame her face. Her makeup was flawless with smoky eyes set off by an on-trend burgendy lip with matching nail polish. Her jewellery was understated consisting of stud earrings, a silver Tiffany & Co. key pendant necklace, barely-there silver bracelet, and a single ring. All complimenting the simple elegance and sleek lines of the Dior dress/ trouser combo.
Speaking at the gala screening, Emma Watson admitted how liberating it has been to break out of her long standing role as Hermione in the Harry Potter series. She confessed that her new role in The Perks of Being A Wallflower was a challenging feat.
“Having played someone who was so restrained and very English to playing this free-spirited American girl, which was at the other end of the spectrum for me, it took a while to break down a lot of the barriers I didn’t even realise I had put up for myself. So when I did, it felt very liberating. I’m very proud of the film.”
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower opens in cinemas next Wednesday, 3 October in which Emma stars alongside actors Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller. As well as Wallflower, Watson’s been snapped up by Sofia Coppola for The Bling Ring, and just finished up filming Darren Aronofsky‘s Biblical epic Noah.
