When it comes to awards, Modern Family and Homeland may have been the big winners at last night’s Emmy Awards, but when it comes to the red carpet fashion, that was a whole other story!
Under-the-sea styling, a huge trend from this spring and summer, made its way back onto the red carpet last night with shimmering shades of aqua, turquoise and sea-green. Julianne Hough nailed the mermaid look wearing a paillette-embellished Georges Hobeika seafoam gown. Modern Family’s bombshell, Sofia Vergera looked as sexy as ever in a glimmering hand-beaded teal gown by Zuhair Murad, which featured a key hole cut out and open back. Supermodel Heidi Klum rocked a Marilyn Monroe style neckline and thigh high slits in a chiffon Alexander Vauthier pastel dress accessorized by matching metallic heels and sea-green jewels. Nicole Kidman, a pro when it comes to red carpet dressing, looked immaculate and statuesque in a white and turquoise sequinned Antonio Berardi number.
A strange choice perhaps, but yellow also appeared to be a popular one last night on the red carpet. You couldn’t miss Julianne Moore who sported a bright-as-the-sun Christian Dior full length gown. A pregnant Claire Danes opted for a baby-bump friendly strapless Lanvin number that offered the Homeland actress a happy mix of both comfort and glamour. Meanwhile, both Julie Bowen and Kaley Cuoco seemed to hit the mark in their fearless Emmy attire. The bodice on Julie’s Monique L’Huillier gown looked just a little to PVC for our liking, although the drapery around the skirt was admittedly stunning, and Kaley’s Angel Sanchez ruched number could have been beautiful were it not for the almost-fluoro lime green shade.
You’d think that subconsciously channelling 2012’s saucy sellout novel was going to amount to a a red carpet full of leather and bandage dresses but instead, thankfully, those who opted for super-flattering shades of grey turned out looking far more sexy than S&M. Emily Van Camp looked gorgeous in a lacy, sheer J Mendel number whilst even the deep cut out of Morena Baccarin‘s slate grey Basil Soda dress erred on the side of sultry rather than salacious and Kate Mara was a dove grey dream in an embellished Badgley Mischka number. Christina Hendricks Christian Siriano dress was the major disappointment of the night – along with each and every one of those 17 Mad Men non-wins. Too shiny, too tight and far too uncomfortable looking – we’d rather see Christina in her swimsuit because at least that shows just how damn gorgeous her body really is!
Lace pannelling and jewel-tones seemed to be the order of the evening for both Downton Abbey star, Michelle Dockery who looked divine in a jewel-blue toned Louis Vuitton dress and Emmy-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus who also stunned in a deep bordeaux red Vera Wang number. Looking every inch the star Girls actress Allison Williams walked the red carpet in an emerald-green strapless Oscar de la Renta dress complete with edgy cut outs and peplum waistline. But sadly it was our BATD girl-crush Zooey Deschanel who looked far more fairy than fashion-forward in a pale blue meringue-style prom dress. Narrowly missing out on an award for her role as Jess in New Girl her Reem Acra dress may not have wowed us, but her make up and hair really really did. . .
