Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave is a painfully true story with Chiwetel Ejiofor playing Solomon Northup, a free man and violinist in upstate New York, who is tricked, kidnapped and sold into slavery. Initially, he is sold to a kind but cowardly plantation owner, Ford played by Benedict Cumberbatch – after falling out with one of his hands (Paul Dano), he is sold again, eventually falling into the hands of the vicious, bible-bashing racist Edwin Epps, played by the mean but brilliant Michael Fassbender.
It is a tragic story that is beautifully filmed and will have you weeping in the dark, but it is excellent and a must see. Expect to see this film nominated for many awards.
12 Years a Slave is released today in the UK Jan 10th.
