Paolo Sorrentino’s newest film, Youth is the story of two life-long friends who are on holiday in an exclusive health resort in the Swiss Alps. Fred, an acclaimed composer and conductor (Michael Caine) brings along his daughter (Rachel Weisz) and his best friend Mick (Harvey Keitel) who is a famous filmmaker. The hotel and resort caters for the wealthy and in the film we have an insight to the men’s attitude to growing old, looking back at their youth and sharing many great memories and wondering what is left to celebrate.
It sounds like a morose subject, but their friendship has spanned so many decades, we see a very special bond between these two men. Rachel Weisz’s storyline is an unexpected twist in here too, you’ll get a surprise when you see Paloma Faith appear, very tiny #spoileralert! Jane Fonda is magnificent, as you’d expect. I loved this film, the cast were brilliant and I was particularly impressed with Paul Dano, he is such a versatile actor, he is going to just get better and better.
While Mick tries to finish the screenplay for what he images will be his last, most important film; Fred on the other hand has no intention of resuming his musical career.
As the two men reflect on their pasts, they each find that some of the most important experiences can come later in life too….

Italian director Paolo Sorrentino sure knows his contemporary indie music; and Youth had a noticeably brilliant soundtrack. With a little delve we found out that the music from the film features artists including Sun Kil Moon, Paloma Faith, David Byrne, The Retrosettes Sister and more. This one was saved onto our playlists…
