We’re very much of the school of thought, here at Beauty and the Dirt, that it’s nigh on impossible to not enjoy any film that features the wonder that is Meryl Streep. And whilst that may well be true, that’s not the sole reason that we loved Hope Springs. With wonderful performances from both her and Tommy Lee Jones, and the beautiful setting of Maine, this is definitely a film for the over 3os, addressing real relationship issues as you age. And whilst we loved a straight-laced Steve Carrell, we struggled to take him seriously as we waited for the expected joke.
More heartfelt drama than comedy, it tells the story of unlikely, but devoted couple, Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) who after decades of marriage have felt the need to spice things up and reconnect with one another. Having persuaded her husband to get on a plane and head to a renowned couple’s specialist (Steve Carell), in the small town of Great Hope Springs, the real challenge comes as they shed their bedroom hang ups and re-ignite their spark.
