FIT GIRL FOOD: BREAKFAST BOWL RECIPES

March 12, 2015

by Annie Vischer

Fit Girl Food: Breakfast Bowls.

We love a breakfast shake, we love a breakfast chia pot, we love a breakfast yoghurt bow, and we love those new fangled things in between. The breakfast bowl. It’s THE new breakfast trend that’s currently making it big on Instagram, and we’re a huge fan. It’s the no-rules-apply option, an anything-goes mix, and we’ve chosen a few of our favourites from the breakfast bowl experts out there.

First up it’s Natalie Glaze’s (the Nutritionista blog) Sweet Potato Smoothie Bowl. According to Natalie, this little beauty is packed with essential vitamins and nutrients like vitamin C, magnesium, iron and calcium. A pretty good start to the morning! Here are Natalie’s instructions.

Ingredients…
1 medium sweet potato peeled and cubed
1 medium banana
1 pinch of cinnamon
1 cup of almond milk
Optional toppings- nuts, raw cacao nibs and sliced banana

Instructions…
First peel and cut your sweet potato into cubes and place in a pan of boiling water and cook until the sweet potato has turned really soft.
Once soft drain and set aside to cool.
Add all other ingredients into blender followed by the sweet potato.
Blend until a smooth thick consistency has formed.
Place in a bowl and then add toppings.
Enjoy!

If you’re more of a berry girl, Natalie’s got things sorted again with her Superberry Breakfast Smoothie Bowl.

Ingredients…
1 tbsp of yoghurt
1 tsp of superfood berry powder – Natalie used Lingonberry powder for this bowl
1 banana
1 handful of berries- strawberries or raspberries
A splash of coconut water depending on how thick you like the smoothie
1or 2 big handfuls of spinach
Toppings- Natalie used blueberries, pomegranate seeds and bee pollen

Instructions…
Simply blend all ingredients apart from the toppings
Once a think creamy mixture has formed top the bowl how you like
Then stir and enjoy

Of course Hemsley + Hemsley have a gorgeous option too. Here’s now to make their Chia Baobab Breakfast. Chia seeds are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and soluble fibre, and baobab packs a serious antioxidant punch.

Ingredients…
Serves 2
2 sachets of Aduna baobab powder (2 x 4.5g)
1¼ cups of filtered water
5 tablespoons of whole chia seed
1 cup of fresh or 1/2 cup of dried cranberries
½ cup of pecans
1-2 tablespoons of honey to taste
Optional- full fat organic bio yoghurt

Instructions…
Whisk the Baobab powder and 1 tablespoon of honey with the water in a large bowl.
Roughly chop the cranberries and add to the bowl – reserving a few to top.
Add the chia seeds and stir – the chia will start to soak up the liquid. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Meanwhile, chop the pecans in half and enjoy them raw – or for extra flavour spread them out on an oven tray and toast.
Stir the chia baobab again and taste – if you use fresh cranberries you may need more honey.
Spoon the chia baobab mixture into glasses.
Sprinkle over the pecans and the last few cranberries
Optional: Top with yoghurt and drizzle with honey for extra flair.

For an alkalising boost try Honestly Healthy‘s Green Smoothie Bowl. It’s packed full of veg and fibre, and easy as pie to make.

Ingredients…
1 cup of water
1 large handful of spinach
60g of chopped fennel
1 sprig of mint
1/2 a large banana
1 tsp of chia seeds
A sprinkling of muesli
1 ripe nectarine
1 tsp of golden linseeds

Instructions…
Blitz up the fruit, greens and chia seeds and water in a high speed blender until really smooth. Pour into a bowl and sprinkle over your choice of toppings.
