By now we’re sure you’ve seen recaps and images from last night’s Super Bowl 51. Lady Gaga was of course a huge highlight, as the half-time show performer. Gaga looked absolutely stunning from head to toe, but one thing we especially loved was her makeup. Sarah Tanno for Marc Jacobs was the makeup artist, and lucky for us, we got our hands on the entire process so we too, can look as amazing as the pop queen did last night.
Tanno said the inspiration for Gaga’s makeup was to fuse a bunch of her most iconic looks into one that was simultaneously timeless. Below are step-by-step instructions for how to get the gorgeous look:
- Tanno started the process by covering the eye lid in Twinkle Pop Stick Eye Shadow in Au Revoir, to create a feminine but bold eye. She then lined the lids Highlighter Gel Eye Crayon in Violet Femme, and blended it into the base to create a lavender look.
- Next, a darker purple shadow from the About Last Night Palette was applied to the crease as well as the lid. To add more of a pop, Style Eye con No 7 Plush Eyeshadow Palette in the Tease shade was applied to the lid.
- To brighten the skin around the eyes, Tanno highlighted the brow bone with the lightest pink shade from the Style Eye Con No 7 Plush Eyeshadow Palette. She then used the Highlighter Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Blacquer along the lid, and finished off with Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Blacquer to create Gaga’s signature cat eye.
- Next, Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Pink of Me, was used on the waterline in order to create a more ‘open’ look on the eyes, and the last step was applying multiple layers of Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara to the top and bottom lashes to add drama. Tanno focused on creating a shimmery eye on Gaga that complimented the crystal eye mask she wore in the beginning of the show.
5. Next, were the brows. Tanno groomed Gaga’s brows beautifully, first by going through with the Brow Wow Defining Longwear Eyebrow Pencil, which adds fullness and definition, then by combing through them with Brow Tamer Grooming Gel, which keeps them perfect through anything, even a Super Bowl Half-Time show!
6. To keep the skin glowing all night, Tanno first applied a thin layer of Under(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer. Wanting to keep Gaga’s look natural but flawless, she applied a small amount of Re(Marc)able Full Cover Concealer in Young to the high points of Gaga’s face, then Re(Marc)able Full Cover Concealer in Bright to the sculpting points, creating depth. For an even complexion, Tanno used Genius Gel Super-Charged Oil-Free Foundation in Golden Medium and finished the look by highlighting under Gaga’s eyes and the bridge of her nose with Remedy Concealer Pen in After Hours. The final step was setting the face, where Tanno used Perfection Powder-Featherweight Foundation in Golden and created contouring with #InstaMarc Light Filtering Contour Powder in Dream Filter on her cheekbones and forehead.
7. Tanno added rosiness to Gaga’s cheeks with Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in Lush & Libido. This made the look feminine, but still bold enough to last the performance.
8. The last thing Tanno did to tie the look together, was giving Gaga a bright red lip that paired perfectly with her crystal eye mask. Tanno prepped Gaga’s lips with Lip Lock Moisture Balm, and then followed up with Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in Dashing. Tanno then blotted the lips, and reapplied the same shade to create the perfect shade of red. A touch of Enamored Hi-Shine Gloss Lip Lacquer Lipgloss in Hot Hot Hot finished the job.
We can’t wait to try and imitate this look. If we’re lucky we’ll pull it off half as well as Gaga! All the Marc Jacobs products mentioned are available at Harrods or harrods.com, as well as at select John Lewis stores and johnlewis.com
