The much anticipated Dolce&Gabbana AW14 collection that hit the runway as part of Milan Fashion Week was inspired by the romance of fairytales and titled ‘Enchanted Sicily’. Of course none other than makeup superstar and Dolce&Gabbana Make Up Creative Advisor Pat McGrath was manning the beauty fort backstage to ensure each model looked as radiant, glowing and bewitching as any fairytale heroine you care to think of.
First up? A flawless yet dewy base. Perfect Luminous Liquid Foundation (£35.50) was applied, followed by a paler tone around the eyes, forehead, nose, cheeks and chin to subtle highlight and illuminate the complexion. Next came a light application of Blush in Nude (£31.00) to the apples of the cheeks.
The secret behind this youthful and fresh look is steering clear of the bronzer. Concentrating on a highlighting with a lighter colour allows you to contour without the need to falsify shadow. The contrast of the highlighting colour against the neutral foundation colour is enough to emphasise bone structure for this look.
For the lips, the Dolce&Gabbana team used the new Classic Cream Lipstick in Honey (£24.00), and applied lightly with fingertips. Perfect Luminous Concealer followed to even out the tone of the lips, before a little Sheer Shine Gloss in Acqua (£23.00) was applied to the centre of lips to accentuate dewy glow of the complexion overall.
Of course the most intricate part of this AW14 look are the eyes. Pat chose to apply the lighter shades from the Dolce&Gabbana Eyeshadow Quad in Desert (£39.50) over the entire eyelid, with a touch of the new Perfect Mono Cream Eye Colour (due to launch in June) in Innocence and Gold Dust, both blended together, to highlight the eyelids, and in Cocoa to add depth to the crease of eyes.
Two forms of black eyeliner were used for this look. Dolce&Gabbana Eyeliner (£19.00) was applied to both the upper and lower lash lines to define, then Intense Liquid Eyeliner (£24.50) was drawn very delicately in a very fine line over the outer half of the lower lash line, and in a thicker yet slickly tapered line over the whole of the upper lash line. A nude liner was then used to brighten the inner corner of the eye.
Pat prioritised adding curl and definition to lashes, instead of simple volume. She used layers of Intenseyes Masara in Black Intense (£26.00) along with Passioneyes Mascara (£26.00) for the lower lashes. Brows had structure but remained natural.
Whether you’re a guilty-pleasure Disney girl, or harbour a nostalgia for all those fairytale story books of your child hood, you’ll know that the eyes are key to any picture or animation of princesses or fairies the fairytale world over. Long lashes that open up eyes and give that Bambi-esque look of innocence are a must, and the girls that took to the runway for Dolce&Gabbana AW14 in Milan had it in spades.
