We first saw Ghost Stories at a preview screening last year. It’s based on Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson’s original Olivier nominated stage production and it was instantly jumpy from the start. We then knew what we were in for, or so we thought.
Starring Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther, Andy Nyman, Paul Whitehouse, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, the clever storyline follows professor of psychology, arch-sceptic and one-man ‘belief buster,’ Phillip Goodman. One day, out of the blue, he receives a letter, apparently from beyond the grave. It’s from his mentor, Charles Cameron, the ‘original’ TV parapsychologist who went missing fifteen years before. Cameron had been presumed dead, until now, as he writes to Goodman urging the pair must meet.
After receiving the letter, Goodman is in disbelief but he must meet up with the person who sent the letter to find out if it’s true and it seems that it is, Cameron is still very much alive.
The reason for the meetup becomes clear – Cameron wants Goodman to do some investigating and find a rational explanation for three ghost stories that have never been solved. As Goodman investigates, he meets three haunted people, each with a tale more frightening, uncanny and inexplicable than the last.
But the ending is unexpected. When all is revealed and we see the storyline is about something much more torturous than the supernatural. It’s both the actors and director that bring the play to the big screen, yet not forgetting where the original story came from and this makes the whole thing so much more interesting.
