I know that at this time of year we are all supposed to be avidly searching for other people’s Christmas presents, buying up racks of scarves, warm layers and knee high boots, but in truth, there’s nothing more warming for me than taking a browse through the SS14 Cruise Collections that boast warm weather-friendly designs and luxurious fabrics. It is pure indulgence and complete fashion escapism.
The Gucci Women’s Collection for Cruise SS14 is no exception. The buzz-phrase of the range is ‘opulent nonchalance’, designs that boast a ‘couldn’t care less’ glamour in the form of relaxed silhouettes that flow and drape in all the right places, whilst the feminine form is accentuated with a sash synching in the waist here, and a well placed seam there.
Creative Director Frida Giannini described the range as a ‘collection of all [her] getaway essentials, designed for an up and coming Jerry Hall beaming with breezy style’. Rio de Janeiro is cited as one of her inspirations for the collection and this is more than visible in the tones and hues put to use in the colour palette. Sand and pearl-esque sheens blend with nectarine and nude blushed shades that married perfectly with the rose tinged sunset background that accompanied the models that brought each design to life down the runway this year. The vibrant colours of the Rio de Janiero lifestyle come through in the rainbow reflection of the iridescent clothes and accessories.
Sports-luxe pieces sit in juxtaposition to luxurious kimono night gowns and wrap dresses to give a fresh and youthful dimension to the glamorous collection. Bombers and basket-ball-esque t-shirts up the ante of the collection, giving a high-energy edge to those female form fitting pieces that emphasise waistlines and gather in at the bust.
Whilst I might not be able to slip into a Gucci SS14 Cruise Collection shirt dress right about now without fear of catching a sniffle or two, I can at least indulge my cruise collection cravings with an accessory or two. Handbags in deerskin with Bamboo detail and tassles promise to lend an exotic flavour to any outfit. My favourite piece? The Soho Shaded Leather Shoulder Bag (my place of work is in the name, it’s meant to be right?). I’m a sucker for leather accessories in gold. My winter outfits tend to be fairly plain, I’m a cosy oversized jumper and textured black cigarette pants kinda girl, and I rely on my accessories to really make things pop. This latest handbag offering from Gucci glows beautifully with a gold ombre effect and is embossed with Gucci’s iconic interlocking G design.
Whilst others might be happy sitting in front of a glowing roaring fire this winter, I’d much rather sit in front of a sunset streaked Cruise Collection SS14 Gucci bag. This one in particular. (That hint was for you Father Christmas, just in case you’re listening. I’ve been a really good girl.)
