People are so busy talking about Scarlett Johansson`s amazing post baby body at the Oscars, it is as if they are blind to her hideous haircut. Maybe most of the commentators were men. They were so mesmerised they were not even bothered about looking at her face.
Her hair, which used to be at its best a particularly pretty shade of vermillion, was now short with shaved bits and an ugly blond with mousey roots. I think she was supposed to be feeling edgy and instead just looked chavy.
Some women are so feminine they look ultra girlie with a short haircut. This haircut revealed that Scarlet Johansson is not that woman. More than that it revealed a severe lapse in taste.
Undercuts were everywhere on the red carpet this year. But why? The undercut was invented in the 80s by punks and goths, who shaved bits off their heads in their bedrooms as an act of rebellion. Thirty years later it does not have anything to say except I am trying to be something that I am clearly not.
I don’t think there is an age women should not have long hair or should not have short hair. I hate labels like that. But after seeing Rosamund Pike with a pony tail over an undercut I think undercuts should never be worn once you get out of your teens. It just makes women who are pretty look stupid. The idea of Rosamund Pike trying to be edgy is baffling. Pike is classy, elegant. What must have happened in her head to make her eschew elegance for potential ridicule?
I wonder if they have the same hairdresser. I wonder if they had some kind of hair damage that was so bad they would want to do that. Or maybe it was brain damage.
The undercut cut is not classy but worse than that it is not even an act of rebellion. It is an act of severe misjudgement. And please can it stop now?
