Esteemed Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo has teamed up with Hermés.The designer is set to launch two limited-edition collections of mythical silk carré scarves for the French luxury brand, called Comme des Carrés. The line is predicted to hit story sometime February 2013, making the scarves a perfect gif t for Valentine’s Day.
The first collection of the line, entitled Noir et Blanc, will feature five scarves with abstract black-and-white designs. It will only be exclusively sold in Comme des Garçons stores in Tokyo’s Aoyama neighborhood, New York and Paris. However, if you aren’t keen on traveling after the first collection, the second collection, Couleur, will be available in Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market store in London. Couleur will consist of six colourful scarves that feature geometric elements like giant patchwork, Vichy checks and shirt stripes.

Rei Kawakubo, Japanese designer and founder of Comme des Garçons says, “I have always had an immense respect for Hermès’ tradition and artisanal know-how. During this joint project, rather than being guided by the idea of the scarf as it is worn, I became interested instead in the beautiful ‘artworks’ that the designs on Hermès carrés represent, and I sought to change them by adding elements. By combining them with abstract images, we have transformed the carré and created a unique object”.
We cannot wait to see the results of this collaboration made in heaven, not only out of our love for Kawakubo’s designs but also how well the two designer brands already compliment each other. Kawakubo’s collections often feature materials draped across the body or knotted into an asymmetrical shape, just like an enormous luxury scarf. As well as a signature monochrome palette, her designs have been infiltrated with colour and bold prints, perfect for bringing a modern aspect to Hermès’ classic style.
