Jiro Dreams of Sushi

August 22, 2012

Yum!

I didn’t think I’d ever be sitting here trying to convince you to watch an 80 minute documentary about sushi, but here we are…

Hear me out on this one.

Last week I had the chance to watch ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi‘, a beautifully shot documentary about 85 year old Jiro Ono, a man who owns a 10 seat sushi restaurant in a Tokyo subway station. He also happens to have 3 Michelin stars, a 4 month waiting list and is considered by many to be the world’s best sushi chef.

It’s an engrossing story, not only for foodies (although the level of food-porn in this documentary is off the charts), but for the casual viewer as you watch Jiro’s story, his rituals, dedication, skill, the impact of over-fishing and the tense relationship he has with his son Yoshikazu who is struggling to live up to his father’s legacy.

I strongly recommend catching this documentary if you can – preferably at home with a sushi platter, I’ve never had a movie make me feel so hungry..!
