Maison Martin Margiela is one of the most enigmatic fashion labels in existence, predominantly due to the fact that the man behind the name was reluctant to ever front the brand, and provide it with a face. The blank labels and the shroud of mystery surrounding him, was part of what made the house of Martin Margiela so renowned. He retired from the house in 2009 and now, in the latter part of 2014 we see an already well-known face stepping up to the helm.
John Galliano will take up the position as Creative Director at Maison Martin Margiela. President of OTB (the company currently in control of Maison Martin Margiela) Renzo Rosso, has said that ‘John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time – a unique, exceptional couturier for a maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion. I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home’ (Vogue.co.uk).
We can look forward to seeing his first designs in January during Paris Couture Week, these will mark his re-entry into fashion after taking steps to recover from the alcohol and drug addictions that he has recently opened up about.
