Never one to shy away from lending his name to a worthy (and occasionally somewhat unworthy) collaboration, Karl Lagerfeld‘s latest venture is with Japanese beauty brand Shu Uemura on a special holiday beauty collection.
Whilst the fashion designer is no stranger to a beauty collaboration, as last year’s Karl-shaped make up palettes for Sephora can attest, this specific collaboration is somewhat closer to Lagerfeld’s heart as he has been using Shu Uemura make up for more than two decades – albeit not in the traditional sense. Lagerfeld actually uses the brand’s products for shading his fashion illustrations. He said, “I love sketching in the morning. When I go to sleep, I always put my pens and papers next to my bed. I use Shu Uemura eyeshadow [to] sketch, since Shu Uemura has fantastic colors. I design with Shu Uemura make-up because other manufacturers do not offer such beautiful colours.”
Sadly no images of the collaboration have been launched as yet (although they have been shot!), but it is understood that Lagerfeld has given the Shu Uemura team a selection of his hand-coloured fashion illustrations – complete with portraits and political cartoons – from which they will create the “Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura” collection, which will roll out internationally.
And whilst Lagerfeld will be heading up both the colour selection and the packaging which are set to reflect the designer’s “iconic, ironic style” we’re praying for monochromatic sleek finished and not images of Lagerfeld himself splashed across every lipstick, eyeshadow and blush palette. Although a Karl Lagerfeld shaped lipstick bullet, now that would be a collaboration worth getting your hands on!
