Given the sporting year that Britain has had, last night’s BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2012 were guaranteed to make dazzling must-watch television. And yet, there were surprises in store. Namely from the Duchess of Cambridge who chose the awards to make her first post-hospital baby-bump public appearance.

Presenting a humble Bradley Wiggins with the Sports Personality of the Year trophy and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Lord Sebastian Coe, Kate Middleton took to the stage in 2013’s Pantone shade of the year, an emerald green floor-length crepe gown by designer du jour, Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen.

‘Keen to show her support to the UK’s sportsmen and women at this prestigious event which caps a momentous year for British sport’, said a royal spokesperson, Kate covered her not-yet-visible baby bump in a McQueen creation that featured bell-sleeves, a v-neck and daring thigh-high slit. She accessorised with black Jimmy Choo pumps and subtle jewellery from Asprey and Kiki McDonough.
Kate wasn’t the only woman in the room to outshine an incredibly dapper looking David Beckham however, as Jess Ennis, who came runner up, fulfilled her poster-girl image in a scarlet Victoria Beckham body-hugging dress that emphasised her fabulous, trim and toned figure.
