CHINATOWN CELEBRATES THE ROOSTER

January 28th marks the start of 2017 Chinese New Year celebrations, and according to the Chinese Zodiac, it is the Year of the Rooster. The Chinese Zodiac moves on a twelve-year cycle, which each part of the circle representing an animal.

Past Years of the Rooster include 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, and 2005. Each animal also represents certain traits, both positive and negative. People that were born in the Year of the Rooster are said to be honest, energetic, intelligent, resourceful and confident. At that same time, they must be weary of coming off vain and arrogant. Among people born in the Year of the Rooster are Prince Philip, Beyoncé, and Serena Williams.

In London, the Chinese New Year celebrations will be on full blast throughout the weekend. Hundreds of thousands of people will gather at the West End to enjoy the colorful parade winding through the streets. Live stage performances in Trafalgar Square will include traditional dancing, acrobats, and martial arts acts. The celebration will conclude with the grand finale in Trafalgar Square with fireworks and a show.

Red is the official color that represents the Chinese New Year, as it is said to bring good luck for the new year. Make sure to say “Xin Nian Kuai Le” (Happy New Year in Mandarin) or “San Nin Faai Lok” (Happy New Year in Cantonese).
