M.A.C Cosmetics was the Official Make-up Partner to the 2013 British Academy Television Awards, the stars and nominees at the big event with make up to match their red-carpet ready fashion. Where the dresses were a showcase of some of this season’s key fashion trends (we’re talking about you Sienna Miller and Helen McCrory) the make up happily followed suit. A how-to-wear of a handful of this season’s spring beauty trends.
M.A.C senior artist Rebecca Butterworth commented on the BAFTA TV beauty trends saying, “Early 20th century glamour inspired last night’s beauty, with many looks referencing the vintage feel of Parades End and The Great Gatsby. Eyes were darkened with veils of smoke while lips took inspiration from Silent Hollywood starlets, all offset against a canvas of velvet textured skin. Bright reds were also hugely popular and brought a spring/summer feel to the night.”
Stars such as Pamela Smyth, Lou Page, Erika Okvist, and Sharon Doyle were seen on the red carpet, rocking make-up looks from M.A.C’s make-up artists. Smoky eyes and a neutral eye palette seemed to be a major trend this year. Stars strayed away from drastic pops of color and instead opted for more brown tones and black liners.

Helen George obviously drew inspiration from the Twenties jazz era with a red lip and neutral makeup palette. However the real life execution didn’t quite matchup. We still love her bold red pout, but the eye makeup turned out much darker and more defined. We love the makeup, but did it coordinate with the blue lace cutout dress she wore to the event? We think a more neutral lip would have paired up better with the dress but she looks stunning nonetheless.
Romola Garai played it safe this year with a brown toned palette and subtle cat-eye. Her skin was kept matte with a slight pink tint to her lips.
Olivia Coleman was a two time winner at the BAFTA’s last night, and we also give her another honorary award for her great makeup choice. True to M.A.C’s facechart, Coleman left all the drama for her eyes and sported black liner that let her brown eyes pop and perfectly comlepmented her dark plum gown.
Claudia Winkleman may have played it a little safe, sticking to her signature heavily-kohl’d smokey eye and bronzed skin, but as its a look that we all know and love (and one which suits her to a tee!) we’ll let her off. That said, we’d love, just once to see the TV presenter stunner rocking a bright fuchsia or tomato-orange lip (she definitely could).
The Made in Chelsea stars were consistent with their on-screen “personas” keeping their makeup soft and relatively safe with a brown toned palette and subtle pink pouts.
