I remember the first time I took my two girls to see Father Christmas at a local shopping centre. It didn’t matter to them that the reindeer were obviously made of plastic, as was the snow. For them this really was a little slice of Lapland right here where they lived. They dutifully joined the queue and waited patiently (well after all, impatient children get nothing on Christmas morning do they?) until they could enter behind that large red curtain to meet Santa himself.
The eldest was bold and spoke up clearly, the youngest at only around three was completely tongue-tied. I don’t know if they have remembered it at all but I will never forget it. I spent the whole 3 or so minutes with a very large lump in my throat and they told everyone they met all about it for days afterwards. Even now Father Christmas is a figure who is taken very seriously and although, obviously, they are way beyond believing in him, we still have to put out brandy, a mince pie and a carrot, in the fireplace each and every Christmas Eve. (You know, just in case!).
