This year’s Metropolitan Museum Of Art’s annual Costume Institute Exhibit Opening Hall – or that’s the Met Gala to you and me – offers the stars to pay homage to the chosen theme of the year. Some go all-out, while others dedicate subtle hints of their look to the night.
Enter this year’s theme; ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology‘, which examines the role of technology in fashion today. This was interpreted in a variety of ways, including a light-up dress, so much metallic, smoky dark eyes and glowing, silvery skin for a futuristic feel.
We have the inside scoop on some of the low-key but beautiful looks that Chloe Grace Moritz and Emily Blunt wore for the evening; and which essentials you need to get their makeup looks.
Chloe Grace Moretz
Chloe Grace Moritz went for a full-on Elizabeth Arden makeover, as “Chloe’s glittering, silver Coach gown called for a glamorous makeup look with sultry eyes and an iridescent, glossy lip”.

SKIN:
- First, Flawless Future Moisture Cream (£40) was applied to hydrate the skin, followed by Flawless Start Instant Perfecting Primer (£28) to blur imperfections and create a smooth canvas. Take a look at our review of this primer here.
- Using a damp sponge, Flawless Finish Perfectly Nude Makeup in Vanilla Shell (£29) was blended in for a natural finish. Set with Ceramide Skin Smooth Loose Powder in Translucent (£30)
- Ceramide Cream Blush in Pink (27) was applied to the apples her her cheeks and layered in Romantic Rose Beautiful Colour Radiance Blush (£27) on top for intensity and long-wear stay.
EYES:
- To definer her brows, Beautiful Colour Brow Shaper and Eyeliner in Soft Blonde (£18.50) was used.
- On the lids, Beautiful Colour Eye Shadow in Shimmering Taupe (£18) was applied from the lash line to the crease, For a soft sultry look Beautiful Colour Eye Shadow in Smoulder (£18) was smudged into her top lash line and Shimmering Taupe in the bottom lash line, instead of liner.
- A coating of Grand Entrance Mascara in Black (£22) finished off the eyes, on both top and bottom lashes. Check out our review of this stunning mascara here.
LIPS:
- To play off the metallic detail on her dress, Sunset Bronze Primastic Lip Gloss in Moonlight Kiss (£18) gave a sheer, iridescent finish.
Emily Blunt
Jenn Streicher, celebrity makeup artist for Laura Mercier, created a simple, monochromatic makeup look to complement Emily Blunt’s stunning blue Michael Kors dress. Streicher shared that Emily’s eyes were the focal point of her beauty look. To coincide with this year’s theme, Streicher created a “very modern look with clumpy, right-off-the-runway lashes.” – here’s how to pull chunky lashes off for yourself.

SKIN:
- First, Blunt’s skin was prepped with RéVive Intensité Moisture Serum Extreme (£230), followed by Révive Intensité Crème Lustre Day and RéVive Moisturizing Renewal Eye Cream, which refined her skin and increased the look of natural fullness. - Next, Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Oil Free (£29) was applied to the entire face, to ensure long-lasting makeup throughout the entire evening.
- To achieve a soft, glowing look, Streicher used NEW Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation in Linen over the entire face, and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-2 to even the skin tone.
- To accentuate Blunt’s gorgeous cheekbones, Streicher created a light contour with Fiona Stiles Sheer Sculpting Palette and then applied Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder (£27) right above her cheekbones to emphasize a nice, sheer glow.
- To set the look, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder was applied to her entire face.
EYES:
- Next, Streicher primed the eye using Laura Mercier Eye Basics in Cotton (£21). She then glided Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour in Vanilla Nuts to add a light neutral champagne hue over the eyelid. She then applied Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour in Fresco (£19.50) to the crease all the way up to the brow, to bring in some warmth.
- To intensify the rich brown colour, Streicher applied a small amount of Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour in Truffle to the crease.
- Streicher then applied Ardell Long Black lashes across her lash line and added three coats of Laura Mercier Faux Lash Mascara in Black to create a “clumpy lash look.” Take a look at which mascaras we recommend to get chunky, voluminous lashes here.
LIPS:
- Adding the final touch, Streicher used Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in Embrace (£22) for the perfect pout.
