Michelle Obama Wears Wu

January 22, 2013

Four years ago, Michelle Obama the new First Lady, stunned in a white, one shouldered dress as her husband was inaugurated as President of the United States. The much-talked-about gown, created by Taiwan-born fashion designer, Jason Wu, was as much of a hit with the public, as Obama’s entrance into presidency, catapulting the almost-unknown designer, Wu, into fashion stardom.

Four years on, and not only has Wu continued to secure a name for himself on the fashion circuit – most recently for Spring Summer 2013, with a strong and sexy leather-led collection, but he has remained Michelle Obama’s go-to designer. And last night, at President  Obama’s second term inauguration, he was once again Michelle’s choice despite there being 15 possible designers in the running, according to CNN.

Wu told WWD “Mrs. Obama likes to keep her secrets. She surprised me again. She’s really good at it. I was so nervous. You’d think I wouldn’t be since I’d experienced it before but I really was.” On why he chose a red dress, Wu said, “Like last time, I had to go with my gut. I instinctively had to think of the woman in the dress. After four years in office, I thought the country was ready to see a confident First Lady in red. It just felt right.”
