300 was the Gerard Butler boasting blockbuster that revolutionised the visual style of cinema and brought to screens across the world, a cinematic version of Frank Miller’s graphic novel Xerxes.
The latest offering, 300: Rise Of An Empire is sadly lacking in Gerard Butler, which will take a lot of the appeal away for the girls (though Eva Green does inject a smouldering punch of girl power). Nevertheless it takes the action away from the contained space of the first film, out to sea as Greek general Themistokles tries to unite Greece by leading the charge that looks set to change the course of the war.
The film follows Themistokles’ battle against invading Persian forces that are led by Xerxes, a mortal who has transformed into a god, and Artmesia, the commander of the Persian navy.
In the first film there were two main characters. Gerard Butler, and gore. Gerard may be absent from this sequel, but the blood and gore are still firmly in residence. With 3D making it all the more evident. The film stars Eva Green, Sullivan Stapleton and is directed by Noam Murro.
