Only Lovers Left Alive, directed and written by Jim Jarmusch, follows two vampires, Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and his wife Eve (Tilda Swinton). The film takes on the subject matter, turned into a phenomenon recently by the likes of the Twilight trilogy and The Vampire Diaries, and grounds it in something far grittier and subtle in its portrayal of vampire life.
Adam has, over the centuries, morphed into a troubled rockstar, and is struggling to stay in step with the ever evolving world around him. We meet him in Detroit, whilst Eve is in Tangier, receiving regular supplies of blood from Marlowe, a wise vampire played by Joh Hurt. Sensing all is not well with Adam, she leaves Tangier to be with him. Their interaction is moving, and we come to root for these characters, even as their entirely relatable activities together such as playing chess, taking drives and dancing to music together, become intertwined with the rather stand-out image of them sucking on blood-ice-lollies.
All is well until Eve’s sister comes to visit, upsetting the equilibrium of their existence amongst the humans around them. All at once the characters must jump into action, to try and prevent their world from being turned entirely upside down. For a sneak peek of what’s to come take a look at the trailer below.
Only Lovers Left Alive will be released in cinemas on 21st February, with Valentines Day previews taking place across the country at selected venues across the country.
