The story follows the author and her siblings’ unconventional upbringing led by an alcoholic father and free-spirited mother as they dance along the poverty line. When sober, Jeannette’s father, played by Woody Harrelson, is charismatic with his bold life lessons and educational topics. However, his alcoholism often leads to lost jobs and a wracking amount of debt.

Jeannette’s mother, played by Naomi Watts, detests the domestic lifestyle and instead focuses on her artwork. The children are left to fend for themselves as they move every few months across California and Arizona. Eventually, they begin to prosper on their own, with Jeannette moving to New York City – but her parents are never too far away.
