Errol Douglas talks us through some of his favourite hair looks from the 87th Academy Awards, and how to try your hand at them at home…

‘Gentle, face framing waves that match the soft pink and sexy cut of her dress, bravo Zoe! I love the mix of glamour and softness here, it’s pitched just right. The key here is to leave out just the right amount of tendrils, just a few. Too many and it becomes unpolished. Infuse moisture into the hair whilst still wet, centre part and blow dry in sections in a downwards motion. Once dry take a large section from each side, take back and pin to secure at the nape loosely. Use a straightener to smooth out either side of the parting and the loose pieces, twisting it slightly to create the soft wave’.

‘A sleek, side swept, on trend long chin kissing bob aka a ‘lob’ in a face warming blonde. What’s not to like? This may be simple but it loses none of the impact when this beautifully executed. it’s the perfect hair match for a statement plunge front in her dress choice. This starts with ensuring that the colour doesn’t strip a finish that’s glossy, thick and healthy. Perhaps Margot shares Reese’s inside out approach with a supplement programme, investing in hair condition at the source. equally important is the precision of the cut, to really get that longer blunt bob shape. Prep the hair with a hydrating styling product while wet, part on one side close to the temple to really get the sweep and tension blow dry, nozzle facing downwards following each section of hair from root to top. Finish with a hairspray that still allows the hair to move freely but secures strays. I like to spray on the hands and gently pat crown to ends once all round’.

‘I like the movement in this feathered shoulder skimming cut. It’s playful but glamorous enough for the red carpet. Don’t be fooled by its simple finish, the movement is cut in and requires a salon visit with an experienced textured hair stylist. With the right cut, this is an easy section blow dry away from simple maintenance at home’.

‘A thick, glossy nape bun with a beautiful eyebrow skimming side parting from this red carpet veteran. Julianne nails it again. Mastering this classic event do will guarantee that heads turn every time. Focus on the blow dry and not disturbing the cuticles during the process – infuse moisture into the hair while wet with hydrating product and take the time to synchronise the dryer nozzle with the barrel brush for each section. Once dry run a straightener over each section to cement the smoothness. Side part before gently combing the hair, securing in a pony tail with a same colour, or clear, elastic. Pin into a bun at the nape in three sections to form a seamless circle. Pat all over gently with hairspray from the hands. I’d advise a colour gloss a few days before a big event to really lift colour and show it off at its best’.
