Inspired by the Paris 2005 riots, French Arabic director, Houda Benyamia, who grew up on a Parisian council estate, brought us DIVINES, which first premiered at the Cannes Film festival, winning the Camera d’Or.
DIVINES is a film about a ghetto near Paris where drugs and religion are above all. Dounia, a young girl living on an estate in the ghetto is hungry to get her share of power and success.
Enlisting the help of her best friend, Maimouna, she decides to follow the footsteps of a respected dealer. When Dounia meets a young sensuous dancer, another window opens for her through which she glimpses the promise of a very different kind of life.
