‘The Baddest Bitch of the Post Apocalypse‘ is on the front cover of W Magazine‘s special collector’s September issue.
Rihanna has been transformed by creative and fashion director Edward Enninful and photographed by Steven Klein. For the magazine’s special collectors issue, the singer has been reimagined as the last woman on earth, and the ruling warrior queen in a dark, dystopian future.
In the cover feature, Edward Enningful talks about the process and how he came to the idea of a futuristic theme, wanting to steer away from anything Rihanna had already done before: “Instead of doing military clothes, I wanted something more futuristic, which is very much a part of the [fall] season. Hood by Air, Prada – all these designers showed collections that had a futuristic edge.”
Rihanna wore bespoke items from an array of designers, created specifically for the shoot. Enningful describes the process; “So then we got designers, like Prada, Margiela, to make specific things for her. Everybody used the theme of the last woman on earth.”
“…if she was the last woman on earth, what would she wear? How would she protect herself? It’s like whatever she finds – rocks, keys, furs – she puts on her body.”
The fashion director loves bouncing off Rihanna and working with the singer throughout the whole process; “And Rihanna was very involved. With Rihanna, it’s always a collaboration and that’s why I love her so much.”
