By Hannah Powling
He’s the man behind THAT epic Chanel ponytail, Kate Moss’ go-to hair dresser and an integral part of the fashion industry. And now, Somerset House is celebrating Sam McKnight‘s outstanding 40-year career with an exhibition, Hair by Sam McKnight, which is launching in November.
Sam has been instrumental in helping to develop the images of some of the biggest and most influential names in fashion, such as Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Princess Diana (to name a few), has shot over 100 British covers of Vogue alone, and has worked with numerous international designers from Chanel to Vivienne Westwood.
The exhibition itself will be the first of its kind and will unveil the creative process behind the craft of Sam’s hair styling within fashion, and a visual timeline of the changing hair styles and trends from the late 70’s to the current day.
Exhibiting pieces from Sam’s extensive archive, the exhibition will also feature photography, magazines, catwalk and behind the scenes footage, private photographs and full outfit looks as well as commissioned wigs and hairpieces.
Oh, there’s more. Hair fanatics and budding stylists alike can rejoice – because at the same time a book (aka hairstyle bible) by the same name, Hair By Sam McKnight is to be launched. Offering pages upon pages of a glossy insight into hair and Sam’s extraordinary work in the last 40 years..
