Young actress Saoirse Ronan is at the pinnacle of her career; she has just taken the lead role in the coming-of-age romance Brooklyn; which is based on the Colm Tóibín novel about a young Irish girl who immigrates to America in the 1950’s; following a family tragedy.
Saoirse, pronounced Sear-sha, is in November’s issue of W Magazine; bearing a worn-down clown like character, it seems rather appropriately taking inspiration from a character in the timeless children’s book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; which celebrates 150 years to date.

The 21-year old sits down with Lynn Hirschberg at W Magazine, for an intimate interview and talks her personal life growing up, and Brooklyn; accompanied by a stunning colourful shoot, as you’d never recognise her before; photographed by the legendary Tim Walker named ‘The Queen Of Hearts’.

“She’s complex, but I would say, somewhat proudly, that Eilis is Irish,” Ronan says about her latest role in Brooklyn. “And being Irish is part of the reason I never wanted to change my name, even when it was strongly suggested. Saoirse means ‘freedom.’ And my middle name, Una, means ‘unity.’ Freedom and unity—that’s quite a lot to live up to.”
