Last Saturday, US show Saturday Night Live celebrated its 40th anniversary with a three hour star-studded special.
“Tonight is like an enormous high school reunion,” 15-time host Martin said as the show began.
The show opened with Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake in a collection of musical medleys and characters before moving on to feature several skits by SNL veterans – Will Ferrell brought back Alex Trebek. Kristen Wiig, Bradley Cooper, Bill Hader, and Betty White played a steamy skit called The Californians. Adam Sandler and Andy Hamberg sang their heart out in a musical number about what happens when cast members can’t stay in character and start giggling. And the list goes on.
Of course, SNL wouldn’t be complete without an appearance from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – the comedy duo paired up with Jane Curtin to appear as a spoof news team for the Weekend Update, with the top story being none other than the SNL anniversary itself.
“Viewers of Saturday Night Live span several generations,” Fey reported. “From the Baby Boomers to Generation X all the way to whatever you call the little dummies who are live-tweeting this right now instead of watching it.”
The evening didn’t end there however – many of the comedians and musicians present in the special finished the night with an extravagant after-party that showcased a slew of A-listers singing along to their favorite songs.
Taylor Swift, Jimmy Fallon, and Dan Akroyd joined McCartney to sing The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” and Swift’s “Shake It Off”.
The one and only Prince also made an appearance, joined by HAIM, Bill Murray, and Fallon for a fierce performance of “Let’s Go Crazy”.
