Not everyone has a huge bedroom with a king-sized bed and walk in wardrobe. Many of our homes are more on the cosy side, with rooms to match. If you’re struggling to make use of a small or awkward shaped space, we get it. Here are a few tips to create practical and warm bedrooms rom the tiniest of areas.
Keep the Layout Simple
Don’t over complicate things as a fussy bedroom will draw attention to the fact there’s not a lot of room. There’s usually an obvious wall for the bed to sit against, so go for that. Avoid pushing it up against the wall if you can and place it in the centre instead, so there’s room to walk around it. The key here is not to cover-complicate things.
Install Inventive Storage
The enemy of a small bedroom is clutter. And the way to avoid clutter is with storage, which needs to be strategic if you’re dealing with a tiny space. Choose a bed with drawers underneath and wardrobes with sliding doors. Your wardrobes will work best either side of the bed – this creates a frame and frees up the other walls for artwork, photos and wallpaper. Consider putting floating shelves up high to avoid too much clutter around the floor. You can even buy headboards with storage, or if you really are dealing with the smallest of spaces, your windowsill can double as a shelf.
Be Practical
You’ve got to think practically when designing your bedroom. Compact rooms are much easier to heat and bulky radiators can take up much-needed space – an electric heater is a great space-saving solution. Take advantage of every single nook and cranny and always choose multi-purpose furniture – ottomans are great because they offer a place to sit as well as storage. You could even choose a daybed, which serves as a cosy sitting area in the day but a bed at night. Or what about a bed that tucks away or folds up against the wall? Avoid table and floor lamps and choose mounted wall lamps instead.
Consider the Size of Everything
Furniture that may have worked well in a previous home will probably not be quite as successful in your bijou bedroom. You don’t want a huge headboard or oversized desk as they’ll throw out the proportions of the space.
Use Bright Colours
Don’t feel like your small bedroom has to be white. Go bold. Go for fun, bright wallpaper if that’s what you like – but just on one wall as opposed to the whole room. Colourful paint and artwork all adds character and creates a talking point – taking attention away from its less than generous size.
Finishing Touches
There are a whole host of finishing touches you can add to complete your cosy bedroom. A gallery wall above the bed, as well as curtains hanging as close to the ceiling as possible, will draw the eye upwards and create the illusion of space. Adding mirrors will really make the room feel bigger. And finally, keep accessories minimal.
