Last night I went to what has to be the coolest club in London. Visiting Spiritland in Kings Cross is life affirming in the same way as your first visit to New York. By day it’s a café. Menu choices are nicely thought out – each one crafted in love. Cocktails are exquisite. The most lovely Expresso Martini of the decade.
The concept is that the café is built around a world class sound system. A one off and generally acknowledged to be the best in Europe. The result of that is that cool people want to DJ there and the music, from dance to country, from classic to super current – it’s all magnificent. Good people want to go there.
Last night Jarvis Cocker previewed his dancefloor meditations. Jarvis is wonderful, mesmerising and fun. The first meditation is a history of the beat and how the beat equals Mantra. Sexual Healing comes peppered with stories of Beethoven, Goebels and more. You listen to it in the dark. Then you carry on drinking, eating, whatever and the next dancefloor meditation is the transcendent rhythm and Bee Gee. Somehow Jive Talking becomes a Mantra, a meditation as it segueways into creating a transcendent state of mind.
Mesmerising, beautiful, exciting, Spiritland is situated at the back of Kings Cross, by a canal. You don’t even feel like you’re in London and dancefloor meditations definitely takes you to another place.
Spiritland, 10 Stable Street, Kings Cross, London N1C 4AB.
Open 8am to 12pm weekdays.
