The Face magazine was one of the best magazines I loved as I was growing up and set the tone for a very cool voice covering fashion, music and entertainment. The art direction, style and photography in The Face was hugely influential, founded in 1980 by Nick Logan, sadly folded in 2004.
Now, 15 years later, The Face is back, online, in print and on social with an Instagram and YouTube account. Harry Styles and Dua Lipa grace the covers of the new magazine.
Over the course of its 24-year lifespan, it became synonymous with London’s burgeoning punk and rave scenes. The Face launched careers of some of the fashion industry’s most famous photographers, including Corinne Day, Juergen Teller, Nick Knight and David Sims. Other famous names associated with the mag were Julie Burchill, Tony Parsons and Katie Grand, who founded LOVE magazine, she was the fashion director in 1999.
The new editor of The Face is Stuart Brumfitt, a former editorial director of Vice Media’s Amuse, a travel website. I can look at the cover and see that logo with a lot of fond memories. I am no longer the target audience but pleased to see a new print title come along, especially when a huge title like Marie-Claire has announced it is closing this week.
