Originally built in 1864 – the historic German Gynmasium is getting a little revamp; and opening up again to us in it’s former glory.
Opening their doors to the public today (Thursday 12th November) in vibrant Kings Cross; the glorious building houses a restaurant, grand café, bars and a terrace serving up the best Mittel-European cuisine.
The huge structure was erected over 150 years ago by the German community in London and was the first purpose-built gymnasium in England at the time. The German Gymnasium sported a main exercise hall as a grand and elegant space with high ceilings reaching up to 57ft. Long-forgotten sports were originally practiced here; with classes taking place here from as early as 1866.
Some time pre-war the building ceased to be used as a gymnasium and since has been used as offices, storage and an arts and exhibition space since that time.. So now The German Gymnasium has gotten back it’s purpose and is now a host for delicious cuisine, events and a stunning interior.
Be sure to pay them a visit to where they once practised long-forgotten sports including Indian club-swinging and broadsword; take in some of the history, stunning interior and enjoy some of their wonderful food.
