Awards season has kicked off with the 75th Golden Globes and once again, the ceremony was about more than this year’s winners. Celebrities took a stand and participated in the #MeToo movement. Standing up for victims of sexual harassment, all of the speeches were inspiring and empowering, women supporting each other. Everyone participated in expressing support by wearing black.
It was Oprah Winfrey’s acceptance speech as the first black woman to win the Cecil B DeMille award, that took the biggest stand. She focused on racial injustice, sexual abuse, and attacks on the integrity of the press. Oprah went on to say: “I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day in on the horizon! When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.
Oprah shared via her Instagram…
The night’s two most talked about winners, however, were The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies.
It wasn’t only The Handmaid’s Tale that won Best TV Series, it was Elizabeth Moss herself who won Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Drama and it was well deserved. Here, she is captured by InStyle magazine in their iconic elevator with her Golden Globe award.
Big Little Lies won Best Television Limited Series, with most of its cast members also nominated, but it was Nicole Kidman who won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series and Laura Dern for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series.
