The Marshal is a cosy, small, rather special restaurant In Hells Kitchen New York where I ended up spending my birthday lunch. It boasts farm to table cuisine prepared in a brick oven. I would say it corners a new market of the subtle rustic.
They really worked hard to get the menu perfect, you can taste it. I had a cocktail with white rye and cherries that took me to another place. I think it said Farm In Tennessee. It was a really well thought out cocktail and a perfect aperitif. Light and intense at the same time. And smells of cherries. The Marshal is a very small restaurant on a cute block on 10th avenue.

You can eat as much as you want or share. We had a wood oven French loaf. A small loaf baked fresh that arrived piping hot and cozy delicious. We also shared the Vegetable Bake, layers of vegetables and some goat cheese stacked in a little iron dish. It was super delicious. The Marshal is all about adhering to seasonal ingredients so the menu changes with the seasons and with their deliveries. They choose their meat from rare bread and family owned farms and if you like bacon or pigs on a plate – this is the place for you.
I don’t eat pig myself so I went for wood oven mac and cheese. I am a mac and cheese aficionado and connoisseur. This mac and cheese was super smoky, just the right kind of cheesy, a little mustardy. It comes with or without bacon. It was crazy good. My friend ordered the wood oven grilled cheese with shallots, garlic and bacon. She had it without the bacon. It is cosy, hearty food that manages to be elegant.

We also shared Arcadian Pastures Deviled Eggs. I used to think this was something only served in Downton, but they seem to be making a comeback. Fluffy, tangy yolks and on top was dark prosciutto if you wanted it.
You are easily catered for as a vegetarian just asking for things without the bacon. The Three Kale Salad is another one of their specialities. You get curly kale, wavy kale and red kale. It comes with toasted pine nuts and a garlic dressing and it is also really good. Their l menu was quirky clever and for dessert we got Cherry Lane Farm Strawberry Shortcake. These were the most delicious, juiciest, freshest strawberries I have ever tasted. We added bittersweet chilled chocolate fudge and NYC honey with ice cream, honey comb and bee pollen. These came with candles on the top as they heard it was my birthday, which made me love The Marshal even more. A serving of kindness and birthday cake makes it unmissable.
