The wait is over and we are finally counting down the hours until the grand opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games! You’re right to wonder too – as it is kicking off in Rio at their local time of 8pm, that means for us lot in the UK that it won’t begin till midnight tonight!

What to expect from the Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of Rio 2016 will take place as the Maracana football stadium, and will start at midnight UK time – and is expected to last about 3-4 hours.
The creative team behind the celebration have promised “to deliver a message for planet earth” that will kick off the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Ooh.
The themes will be ecology, diversity and joy. This will form part of the show that gives an honest and open view of Brazil.
Apparently supermodel Gisele is expected to play a big part in the opening ceremony. Dame Judi Dench will also be at the opening ceremony reading a poem by a Brazilian author.
It has been described as the most sexy olympic opening ceremonies to date. Intriguing.
