I saw Thoroughbreds at the London Film Festival back in October and it went straight to on to my top 10 films I saw at the festival. The performances by both of the girls are brilliant, they absolutely carry the film in a very grown up way. You could think by looking at them it could be a teen drama, but the script, the quirky soundtrack and their sharp witted way of communicating with each other makes this a thoroughly (yes) mature and thrilling drama.
Thoroughbreds tells the story of two childhood friends, Lily and Amanda. After years of growing apart, the estranged friends reconnect in suburban Connecticut. Lily has become a polished, upper-class teenager, who attended a fancy boarding school and dresses immaculately, while Amanda is smart, sassy and has rebelled against type in this privileged neighbourhood.
At first, they just argue and seem to be polar opposites but soon, they bond over Lily’s resentment towards her selfish, controlling stepfather, Mark. As their friendship returns, they also begin to bring out each other’s destructive and manipulative sides. After plotting for days they decide to hire a random local boy to try to improve their situation, watch the trailer and put this on your go-see list, you won’t be disappointed.
