Three Different Ways to Handle Crawl Space Moisture

December 22, 2020

As you know, a crawl space is a small place situated between the foundation of a house and the earth. The primary purpose of creating this space is to regulate the moisture under the floor. The one impending necessity is crawl space if a home is situated in an area where weather changes affect the surroundings most. It is also valuable for preventing mold growth and other issues like that. Here are three different ways contractors repair your crawl space.

1.Waterproofing a crawl space

The very first thing to deal with excessive moisture in the crawl space is to make it waterproof. It can be done in three ways.

Setting the drainage

Be very clear and sure that all the sanitary pipes and drainage systems passing through the crawl space are properly sealed and tight. If there is any water leakage, it can lead to mold growth and ultimately a boost in mold smell in the home. To tackle this problem, a crawl space repair expert usually adds Sump pump suctions.

Installing a Sump pump

Standing water in the crawl space is removed through sump pump suctions. It is designed for removing residual water by sucking away from the foundation of the house.

Getting a Dehumidifier

The last step leading to waterproofing crawl space is to use a dehumidifier. The appliance is quite effective in balancing the humidity level of your crawl space. It controls the moisture in the air, maintaining the temperature of the crawl space as required.

2.Insulation

Another way to deal with crawl space moisture issues is to do proper insulation. You need to hire insulation experts who will take all necessary measures to remove excess water from the crawl space.  Insulation means adding rigid material, especially foam sheets, on the floor of a crawl space.

The insulation sheet depth and size may vary according to the weather circumstances and condition of the crawl space. It’s helpful in areas with low temperatures, making the home free from the harmful effect of winters. Foam board insulation is usually installed in crawl spaces against the foundation walls.

3.Encapsulation Services

Encapsulating is a term that means creating a shield or envelope around a crawl space. You need to hire a foundation repair expert who installs a water vapor barrier to the crawl spaces.

Steps before encapsulation

Following are the necessary steps that should be taken before encapsulation.

Improve drainage or waterproofing

If you have a  problem with improper drainage and leakage of any gap pipe, don’t waste your time. Go for the remedy of overhauling for any diffused pipe, as it will not let your encapsulation services be as useful as they should be.

Dehumidifier

Always be curious about the sealing condition of the crawl space vents before you use a dehumidifier. Otherwise, your dehumidifier will run 24/7 and increase your electricity bills.

Get Foundation repair services

Beware of the cracks on your walls, uneven floors, and other such problems. These are red alerts that tell you that your home needs  crawl space repair experts. Depending on the problem in these areas, contractors add support to the house’s foundation and re-level it. In many cases, your home foundation walls only require support while there is no need to seek re-leveling services.
