There’s never an out-of-season time for spas. In my opinion any way. In winter you need a pick-me-up, a place to snuggle and hide away from the chilly weather – go to a spa. When spring hits you’ve just got over those beginning-of-the-year blues and are in dire need of a freshen up – go to a spa. And summer? Where better to make use of the late hazy summer sunsets poolside? They’re a little haven of health, with some gorgeous beauty treatments thrown in, and I’m always on the lookout for top locations.
My last visit was to Ragdale Hall, a location renowned for its sumptuous settings and beautiful surrounding countryside. The first thing to note about this place are the staff. They are wonderful. Spa wise its one of the larger ones I’ve visited and the guest count tends to remain fairly high. Nevertheless each member of staff was a joy to be around, and eager to help or advise.
When it comes to the spa facilities, you’re totally spoilt. If you thought a pool and jacuzzi was enough, then think again. Ragdale Hall boasts both indoor and outdoor waterfall pools, a thought zone, a candle pool, a volcanic salt bath, the rose sauna (my personal favourite, the amount of time I spent in there must have bordered on unhealthy, but gosh it was gorgeous), and a cave shower, which recreates the experience of being caught in a thunderstorm in paradise. You must try it, but be warned, a sudden flood of cold water is likely to make you squeal a little!

The main pool area is extensive with a raised water cascade, and water jets dotted about for both feet and shoulders. There’s also an exercise pool with underwater gym equipment. I’m an avid gym bunny so spent quite a bit of time in there. You forget the beauty of water is that you feel like you’re not working at all, but your jelly legs and arms that suddenly appear when you climb out of the water always argue otherwise.
The regular gym is well-equipped and the instructors are always on hand to give you a push in the right direction. The weather was gorgeous during my stay so I ended up taking one of the bikes out for a ride just as the sun was setting. Ask a member of staff for a map, and it marks out a great little ride, that takes you through a couple of the villages nearby. I’d definitely recommend that, the big dose of fresher than fresh air, together with the childish high of free-wheeling down a steep hill were as good a therapy as any you’ll be able to pay for.
That being said, my massage was heavenly. There’s one very long list of massage options to choose from, featuring brands like Clarins, Elemis and Decleor, so you’re set for a quality treatment, whichever one you choose.
Ragdale Hall is the go-to location for a group booking. Everything from their rooms, meals, cafes, relaxation rooms and spa facilities are geared towards larger groups, so if you and your friends are treating yourselves you’ll be more than looked after. There’s lots to explore and it still manages to feel very boutique.
