It has to be said YSL are fairly unbeatable when it comes to mascara. They know how to accessorise an eye. They have a whole menu of mascaras, some that stay on 24 hours, some that lengthen, some that thicken, some that do both. The Vinyl Couture does something else. A cult hit when it first launched, it comes in 9 colours including hot pink and racy gold as well as an edgy black that looks glossy with an edge, vinyl is cool on the turntable and cool on the lashes. The technology of this particular mascara is in its transparent base which means it’s able to absorb dense coating of colour pigments.
The bottle itself is chicly transparent. You could be getting nail polish but you’re getting a very fluid mascara. I’m in love with the Forest Green shade called I’m The Excitement. It’s a precision mascara and you can build as you go with several coats, lengthening each lash. (It’s £22.50).
They have also come out with Couture Eyeliner in gorgeous shades. The green has a striking satin finish and the black has a matt finish. What’s so amazing about these liquid liners is I can actually apply them. I use an eye pencil every day of my life. I can apply it in the back of a taxi, in a lift, anywhere. I have always shied away from the liquid eyeliner because it requires a steady hand, a keen eye and hand to eye co-ordination, none of which I have. Yes there’s something about the size and the weight of this brush – it’s an extra slim felt tip that means application is actually easy. It’s so juicy it floats on all in one stroke and it looks very graphic and defined. It looks purposeful, it looks like I trained in eyeliner school and passed with distinction.
Over the years I’ve probably thrown out over a hundred liquid eyeliners just because I couldn’t apply them. They would invariably be too thick, too splodgy and you can’t smudge away your mistake. The dark green eyeliner and the dark green mascara together are a must have. Eyeliner £25.
